Prior to starting his own firm Bender worked for two other very large brokerage houses. While there, he found that his clients were more than happy to hear from him when the stock market was climbing, but they were not so cheerful when the market was falling. Determined to help his clients become less dependent on the ups and downs of the market, Bender opened the doors of his firm in December of 1999 to help his clients focus on a financial strategy that could bring them more security and peace of mind.
Bender comments, “Our target market consists of individuals who are keenly interested in not losing any of their hard-earned retirement dollars. Our company motto is, ‘protecting and growing your retirement.’ We are very proud of the fact that we haven’t had a client lose money for over thirteen years. Our clients always have some, if not the majority, of their assets targeted toward safety. If they are retired, they don’t want to have to go back to work because their portfolio lost so much money. If they are still working, they don’t want to postpone retirement because the stock market declined rapidly just before their planned retirement date.”
Bender continues, “Our clients most importantly want ‘income’ and ‘preservation.’ Our number one rule is to never lose money. Besides being safety focused, our clients want to simplify their lives. We realize that a client’s retirement should be focused on things they love doing, not financial decisions or stress. For more than a decade now our office has been strategically located across the street from Laguna Woods, the city that has the oldest residents nationwide. We find that our clients want a deeper connection with someone that truly cares, and will be there to help them. This is especially true, as we currently now help the children and grandchildren of so many past dear clients. They want to have a relationship with someone they know will be there for them and their children in the future. There are many businesses today whose managers or supervisors may be here today, but gone tomorrow. We are committed to being here for the long term benefit of our clients, and even for their children and grandchildren as they plan for retirement.”
Bender’s firm has been an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau for more than thirteen years. They maintain the highest rating, A+, allowable by the bureau and have had no client complaints.
In 2010 Bender was awarded the distinction of being named the “Five Star Professional Best Wealth Manager” in overall client satisfaction which is an honor earned by fewer than 7% of the wealth managers in the Orange County area. This nomination came from more than 37,000 high net worth households in Orange County and more than 11,900 financial services professionals. The award is only based on how consumers and financial professionals have evaluated their experience in working with that individual. Becoming a member of the National Ethics Association (NEA) was also very important to Bender because he has always held that being trustworthy and ethical are the cornerstones of helping people realize your true character. The NEA looks back many years to make sure the member has a very clean record when it comes to personal background checks, regulatory checks and professional license checks.

Each month he conducts three financial workshops at different restaurant locations around Orange County, California, with thirty-six workshops planned for 2013. He also keeps his clientele appraised through monthly newsletters as well as various publications for which Bender has written or in which he was quoted and featured.
While most of Bender’s clients are located throughout the Orange County area, he does have clients in various states. Some of his clients drive more than 100 miles to meet with him. Every client relationship begins with a face to face meeting. Then, for long distance clients, communication typically is done by telephone or email.
Bender comments, “With approximately 38 million people living in California, there is always competition in any specialized field, whether you are an accountant, attorney, doctor or financial planner. Finding the person who truly cares, and is very knowledgeable is most important. When I work with a client, I never try to replace their current advisor if someone is already helping them. Often clients want me to form a complimentary relationship with an advisor with whom they have been working with. However, I have found that over a period of time, with our exceptional customer service, people often ask us to help them with more and more of their retirement assets.”
Bender continues, “We are different than many financial services firms because we truly care a great deal about helping people. They aren’t just a dollar sign to us. We always put the client’s best interests first. After all, if we don’t take care of our customers, someone else will. We are here to protect and grow our clients’ retirement. We do this by eliminating risk while still providing growth on assets, increase cash flow with a steady stream of lifetime income, minimize taxes to enhance net worth, stretch IRA’s or 401K’s properly for the benefit of future generations, and simplify retirement for each of our clients so they may enjoy their ‘golden years’ with peace of mind. We had the privilege of helping twenty-four people retire last year, because they saw me as an ‘income planner.’ They had a specific goal, and we helped them reach that goal. Now they are off creating memories after working so hard for so many years. The best motivation I receive is when we help people retire and live their dreams.”
Bender adds, “Our clients appreciate that we make things simple for them with their retirement, and losing money is not in the equation. My philosophy from day one has never been to work with someone once, and then never help them again. Our clients want semi-annual and annual reviews, and we are there to help them. People deserve the right team to help them achieve their goals. Not only does that team need to be very experienced and knowledgeable, but they need to care for everyone equally. Our clients see that we do.”
He also expresses, “More and more people, especially in light of the current stock market volatility, want to protect their hard-earned retirement. They are living longer and longer. Having the right financial coach can make a very big difference for them. We orchestrate a workable plan based on our clients’ goals and needs. We then offer them personalized service no matter the size of their retirement. Unlike risky Wall Street advisors, my goal is to create income streams that last through retirement. I describe myself simply as a ‘safe money planner’. Unfortunately, everyone retiring does not have a guaranteed pension of $4,000 to 8,000 per month. For those that don’t have a pension at all, and for those that do have a pension, but just want more, we are ready to help.”
Bender begins his day very early arriving at his office at 5:30 a.m. He comments, “I start every day early because I am passionate about helping people and I just love my career. It is still dark when I head to the office. Before my first appointment, I use the time to plan for those appointments that day with any last minute preparations. Our office is much like a doctor’s office. I see 8 to 10 individuals or couples daily. I pride myself on being ready, and taking the time to explain to clients the items most important to them so they can make informed decisions about their future.”
Bender adds, “My day finishes when I come home and I get to be a ‘Daddy’. My two children are precious angels as they are nearly one year and two and a half years old. I get to spend quality ‘daddy time’ every evening with them. Our nights are full of play time, dinner time, bath time and bed time where I am able to witness first-hand how wonderful my wife, Po, is with Wyatt and Sawyer. After they go to sleep, any work I have brought home, I accomplish and discuss much of it with my dear wife Po. She is an incredible listener and very intuitive. She has been by my side for many, many years, and is truly my soul mate.
Bender also speaks very highly of his team members who handle policyholder service, assist clients and orchestrate the monthly seminars. Because of the substantial growth Bender has seen in his firm, in the very near future he will be hiring more key employees which will include an associate advisor to assist him as well as a marketing coordinator whose main responsibility will be to follow up with current and potential clients.
Bender has been featured on KABC Talk Radio as well as on KLAA Sports. He has also been seen numerous times on Channel 6 in his local market and soon will be featured on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates around the country working with Emmy Award winner Nick Nanton. He is a contributing author, along with Best Selling author Brian Tracy, to the book, The Ultimate Success Guide, to be released later this year (probably in May, 2013). For ten years he has been featured in the Orange County Resource Guide for Seniors in which he has contributed articles. He is also the author of Financial Success, a monthly newsletter and has been featured in Designing Wealth Magazine.
